After a lengthy hiatus, the familiar splashes and cheers are finally returning to the Aquarena! For over two years, swimmers in St. John's have had to make do, but the wait is officially over. On Wednesday, dedicated swim clubs were granted the exclusive first access to the revitalized facility, marking a significant milestone in its grand reopening.
"It's awesome to be back in this big space. We’ve been waiting for so long and it’s really a big deal to be back for everybody," shared Nathan Wilson from the St. John's Legends club, echoing the sentiment of many who have missed this beloved community hub. The Aquarena, a venue originally constructed for the 1977 Canada Games, underwent extensive renovations following its use for the 2025 Canada Games in St. John's. After completing its initial role, it closed its doors once more to undergo a substantial upgrade.
But here's where it gets interesting: The journey back to full operation has been a considerable undertaking, spanning over two years and requiring an investment of $25 million. This significant expenditure has brought about a wealth of improvements designed to enhance the experience for all patrons.
While swim clubs are already making waves, the general public can anticipate a full return to regular programming starting next week. Craig Neil, the General Manager of The Works, expressed his delight, stating, "It's awesome, it's exciting, it's exactly what we wanted. It's so good to see, this morning, to see all the athletes in the pool." This sentiment highlights the anticipation for the facility's complete reintegration into the community's active lifestyle.
Among the exciting new additions are a brand new one-meter diving tower, a state-of-the-art timing system, and importantly, fully accessible family change rooms. These upgrades are not just about modernization; they're about inclusivity and ensuring the Aquarena can be enjoyed by everyone. The facility will also feature a new waterslide, though it's noted to be a bit smaller than its predecessor.
And this is the part most people miss: While the main aquatic areas are ready, some amenities like the saunas and hot tubs are still a few months away from being operational. The on-site Tim Horton's is also slated for a future reopening. Neil remains optimistic, however, believing that the Aquarena's long-standing presence and the deep connection people have with it will undoubtedly draw crowds back.
What are your thoughts on such extensive renovations for community facilities? Do you believe the investment of $25 million is justified for a space like the Aquarena, or are there other priorities we should be considering? Let us know in the comments below!
