I've spoken to developers creating similar AI tools, and here's the twist: they're not photographers, and they don't need to be. The software doesn't make artistic choices; it performs detection—identifying faces, blemishes, and backgrounds. Anyone can compare the results and choose the better image.
The Misconception:
The accusation that Evoto trained its model on user uploads is a red herring. Tech giants like Google have already developed massive AI models trained on an immense collection of internet images. Smaller companies lease access to these models, so Evoto didn't rely on user-submitted photos.
The Inevitable Reality:
The most surprising fact? This technology is already freely available. You can create professional headshots using Google's tools or even within Photoshop, utilizing the same underlying AI models. You can even replicate the styles of renowned headshot photographers, all without spending a dime.
So, if you're pointing fingers at Evoto, consider this: you might want to redirect your anger towards Photoshop and, more so, Google. If they hadn't taken the lead, OpenAI likely would have. This technological shift was always going to happen.
