Imagine a thrilling new adventure that draws heavily from the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology, all while boasting cutting-edge graphics and gameplay mechanics. That's exactly what Genigods Lab, a game development studio based in Suzhou, has in store for us with their upcoming title, GeniGods: Nezha. This action role-playing game (RPG) not only promises to deliver an engaging single-player experience but also takes clear inspiration from the iconic God of War series.
In an exciting announcement that followed a private presentation attended by Push Square, the studio revealed that GeniGods: Nezha is being developed using the advanced Unreal Engine 5. Moreover, they have partnered with Sony to ensure the game is thoroughly optimized for PlayStation platforms. Co-founders Erdi Yao and Young Lui shared in a roundtable discussion that they have already submitted a playable version specifically for the PS5 Pro to PlayStation China, showcasing how the game will utilize the console's unique features, including the innovative DualSense controller and its immersive tactile feedback.
Additionally, GeniGods: Nezha will also be available on PC, expanding its reach to a broader audience. The storyline places players in the shoes of Nezha, who is depicted as a formidable female warrior influenced by ancient mythology.
The game's narrative promises an epic journey where players will transform from a celestial artifact into the first human—a woman sculpted from water and clay—ultimately reborn as the renowned deity Nezha. Along the way, you'll encounter legendary figures such as Yi, the sun-feller, and Yu, the flood-tamer. You'll also be accompanied by the Heart of Sacred Water, a sentient gift from Nüwa that evolves alongside you, aiding in solving ancient puzzles, overcoming daunting challenges, and uncovering the dark secrets of this mystical world.
It’s crucial to clarify that GeniGods: Nezha does not fall into the Soulslike genre; instead, it offers fast-paced, fluid combat. According to the developers, the best point of comparison for gameplay would be God of War 3, especially highlighted by the monumental boss battles that promise to transition effortlessly between realms of heaven and earth.
In a unique twist reminiscent of classic titles like Mega Man, players will have the freedom to engage with bosses in any order they choose. The game structure includes a hub area where players can unwind, embark on side missions, and enhance their abilities.
While it's worth noting that Genigods Lab is known for their mobile game adaptation of My Hero Academia for Sony's Crunchyroll, GeniGods: Nezha aims to provide a genuine single-player experience devoid of gacha mechanics or live service elements. The team estimates that it will take roughly 25 hours to complete the main story, with around 50 hours required to achieve full completion, or "Platinum" status.
However, here's where it gets intriguing: despite having already invested two years into development, the game is not expected to launch until 2028. This timeline raises the possibility that, while currently focused on PS5 and PC, GeniGods: Nezha could also be adapted for the next-generation PS6.
With Sony's backing and the evident influences from the acclaimed God of War series, this title is certainly one to watch closely as it develops further.
