When early promotional photos, particularly those showcasing the costumes and hairstyles, were released, they sparked a wave of commentary from fans.
"It really made us work harder," admitted Paul Anthony Kelly, who steps into the shoes of John F. Kennedy Jr. He explained to USA TODAY that the feedback, while perhaps initially discouraging, provided a crucial impetus. "It gave more fuel to the fire of creating this. We had to dive deeper. We got clothes on point. It really just finely tuned what we were trying to do." This suggests that the critique, rather than being dismissed, was absorbed and used as a powerful motivator to refine every detail.
But here's where it gets controversial... In June, Ryan Murphy unveiled what he described as "stills from our 'LOVE STORY' camera test." These images, featuring Pidgeon and Kelly, unfortunately, didn't land perfectly with everyone. Fashion writer Danya Issawi, in an article for The Cut, voiced her concerns, stating that the costumes appeared to be "too much like modern-day replicas of their '90s counterparts" and that the hairstyles were "not quite right." Furthermore, in a move that underscores the commitment to getting the details right, the show reportedly replaced its original costume designer weeks into production, according to Vanity Fair. These actions demonstrate a profound dedication to achieving a visually accurate portrayal.
"Once we had it all figured out, we were like, 'Oh, this was ultimately a blessing and for the best,'" Hines reflected. "And everybody ended up looking so fantastic." This sentiment suggests that the challenges faced ultimately led to a superior outcome.
Hines also found the "passionate" reactions from fans to be a positive sign, reinforcing the enduring public fascination with John and Carolyn's story. "I, more than anything, was sort of moved by how strongly people still felt about them," he told USA TODAY. He admitted he initially underestimated the public's continued interest in the couple, even 25 years later. It seems the public's connection to their story remains incredibly strong.
Sarah Pidgeon described navigating the early criticism as a "new experience" but confidently asserted that the final result will satisfy fans. "It was really important, not only to me but to the creatives and the whole team, to get her physically right," she stated. "She's so well-known through these photos. She is an icon of fashion. And I think if you watch it, you'll see that we really got it right."
