Indian Envoy Reaffirms Support for Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka Amidst Corporate Leaders' Meeting
Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha met with Sri Lankan corporate leaders on December 6, 2025, to reiterate India's unwavering commitment to aiding the island nation in its recovery from Cyclone Ditwah. The disaster has claimed over 600 lives and caused widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure collapse. Mr. Jha's meeting focused on the rehabilitation and recovery process, with discussions centered around India's ongoing support and response.
India's humanitarian assistance has been comprehensive, covering both emergency response and long-term medical care. Since the launch of Operation Sagar Bandhu, India has provided over 58 tonnes of relief materials, including dry rations, tents, hygiene kits, and water purification systems. Additionally, they have supplied approximately 4.5 tonnes of medicines and surgical equipment.
The Indian Air Force has been at the forefront of aerial operations, evacuating stranded citizens and delivering relief supplies. Two heavy-lift MI-17 helicopters have been actively involved in these missions. Furthermore, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has played a crucial role, conducting search and rescue operations and assisting vulnerable groups. The NDRF teams, comprising 80 experts and K9 units, have evacuated around 150 people and provided essential aid.
A full-fledged field hospital, staffed by 78 medical personnel from India, is now operational in Mahiyanganaya near Kandy, offering life-saving medical care. The Indian mission has also established medical centers through the BHISHM initiative, deploying Arogya Maitri cubes to affected areas. INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri, and INS Sukanya have provided immediate rescue and relief assistance, with the Indian Air Force's Chetak helicopters and MI-17 helicopters continuing to support evacuation and relief efforts.
Moreover, approximately 2,500 stranded Indians have been evacuated from Sri Lanka, including over 400 on IAF aircraft. The NDRF teams, in collaboration with Sri Lankan authorities, have conducted extensive search, rescue, and relief operations, ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected by the cyclone.
