Raiders' QB Battle: Pickett Steps Up, Smith Out for the Count
The Las Vegas Raiders have a new starting quarterback for their upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Head Coach Pete Carroll announced that Kenny Pickett will take the reins, following an injury to Geno Smith.
Smith, who suffered a right shoulder and hand injury last Sunday, missed practice this week and has been ruled out. Despite his efforts, Carroll confirmed that Smith won't be able to return to action this week.
"Geno's determination is admirable, but he won't make it back this week. He's made great progress, but we need him to be 100% for the game. That's why we're giving Kenny the starting role," Carroll explained.
This marks Pickett's first start for the Raiders since they acquired him via trade from the Cleveland Browns. Last Sunday, Pickett came into the game as a relief quarterback and performed admirably, completing 8 of 11 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.
"Kenny has been a real asset to the team. He's embraced the challenge and shown excellent leadership. His communication skills are top-notch, and his experience on the East Coast will be an advantage," Carroll praised.
Pickett's familiarity with the Eagles, having spent last season with them, could be a significant factor in the team's strategy. He played in five regular-season games (one start) and two postseason contests, contributing to the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX run.
"We're confident in Kenny's abilities, and we're fully behind him. We'll do everything we can to ensure he has a successful game," Carroll assured.
With Pickett's appointment, the Raiders are poised to face the Eagles with a strong and experienced quarterback at the helm.
