In Llandudno, a popular vacation destination in North Wales, the overflowing waste bins have become a pressing issue, raising significant health concerns. Over the recent Christmas week, numerous bins throughout the area were left unemptied, resulting in streets littered with garbage and dog waste bags. This negligence has led to alarming conditions that many residents describe as hazardous to public health.
Local streets such as Augusta Street, Oxford Road, The Oval, Conway Road, and Vaughan Street were particularly affected, with bins filled to the brim and rubbish spilling onto the pavement. In fact, some residents resorted to leaving their trash beside the already full bins due to a lack of space. Louise Evans, a 49-year-old mother and dog owner, expressed her disgust at the situation, stating, "It was absolutely disgusting. The bins were overflowing with all sorts of rubbish, and people were dumping piles of dog poo bags around them. The stench was unbearable." She further warned that this situation poses a serious health risk and could attract rodents.
Councillor Louise Emery of Llandudno echoed these concerns, expressing her disappointment upon seeing images of the overflowing bins scattered throughout both residential and public areas. "With the beautiful weather encouraging people to be outdoors, it’s clear that the bins were used more than usual," she remarked. Emery plans to urge the council to ensure adequate staffing during holiday periods to guarantee that bins are emptied regularly, saying, "We understand that it’s the festive season, and everyone deserves a break, but these overflowing bins have turned into a serious health hazard. I will verify that the Environment, Roads, and Facilities (ERF) department had sufficient staff available during Christmas to manage public litter effectively."
A representative from Conwy County Council attributed the unsightly mess to the irresponsibility of individuals who fail to take their refuse home. "Our open spaces team is actively working between Christmas and New Year to empty bins and maintain cleanliness," she noted. She expressed disappointment at the lack of accountability among some individuals, stating, "There is no justification for littering or fly-tipping. If a bin is full, people should either find the nearest available bin or take their waste with them. Our staff were out from 7 am to 3 pm over the weekend, diligently emptying bins and picking up litter across the county."
