Get ready for an exciting basketball showdown as the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team gears up for the Fairfield Inn & Suites Holiday Classic! This weekend, the Gorillas will take on some tough opponents, and we're here to give you the inside scoop.
A Holiday Classic to Remember
The Gorillas, led by Head Coach Amanda Davied, are set to battle it out at the Aggie Gymnasium in Lawton, Oklahoma. With a record of 7-2 so far this season, they're ranked No. 12 in the Division II Poll, and they're ready to make their mark.
On Friday, December 19th, the Gorillas will tip off against the Cameron University Aggies at 7:00 p.m. (CT). And on Saturday, they'll face the Western Colorado University Mountaineers at 2:00 p.m. It's a packed weekend of basketball action!
But here's where it gets interesting...
Coach Davied's Legacy
Coach Davied, in her eighth year at the helm of her alma mater, has an impressive record of 155-64 (.708). She's not just a coach; she's a trailblazer. In her debut season, she became the first coach in program history to guide the Gorillas to a 20-win season. Last season, her achievements were recognized with the MIAA and KBCA Four-Year College Coach of the Year award. Davied's deep ties to the program, from her playing days to her assistant coaching roles, make her a true Gorillas legend.
Gorillas on a Roll
Currently sitting at 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA, the Gorillas have proven their mettle. They've made it to the NCAA Division II National Tournament in three consecutive seasons, and they're aiming for more. Leading the charge is Marin Adams, who averages an impressive 13.0 points per game. Ja'Miya Brown and Harper Schreiner also shine, averaging double-digit points. Schreiner's contributions go beyond scoring; she's a true all-around player, chipping in with rebounds, assists, and steals.
A Peek at the Stats
The Gorillas are a force to be reckoned with, scoring an average of 71.2 points per game and grabbing 46.0 rebounds (with an impressive 14.9 offensive rebounds). Their defense is solid too, holding opponents to an average of 65.1 points and 35.7 rebounds per game.
Career Highs and Double-Doubles
This season, the Gorillas have seen some exceptional performances. Ja'Miya Brown set career highs with 25 points against No. 8 Fort Hays State and 11 rebounds against Northwestern Oklahoma. Amanda Byrnes and Hannah Miller also had standout games, showcasing their skills on the court.
And let's not forget Harper Schreiner, who notched her 10th career double-double against St. Mary (Kan.). Schreiner is a stat sheet stuffer, ranking highly in assists, steals, and rebounds for Pitt State's career ranks.
International Talent and Home-Grown Stars
The Gorillas roster features an exciting mix of international talent and local stars. Marie Wembadjonga from Gabon and Karolina Kiraga from Poland have taken unique paths to Pittsburg State, bringing their skills and experiences to the team. Meanwhile, five players from Arkansas, including junior Ja'Miya Brown, have made their mark on the team.
A Tough Road Ahead
But here's the part most people miss: the Gorillas' opponents are no pushovers. Cameron University, despite their 0-9 record, will be hungry for a win. And Western Colorado, with a solid 5-3 record, is a force in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
So, will the Gorillas continue their winning streak? Or will their opponents pull off an upset?
