Raccoon Breaks into Liquor Store, Gets Drunk and Passes Out! | Wild Animal Shenanigans (2025)

A wild, furry culprit triggers a weekend of chaos at a Virginia liquor store, then ends up sleeping it off in a bathroom.

Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter announced on Saturday that an officer responding to an unusual incident at the Virginia ABC store in Ashland encountered a raccoon that had broken into the shop, knocked bottles off shelves, and then collapsed in the restroom from apparent intoxication.

According to a shelter spokesperson’s post on Facebook, the officer safely captured the masked intruder and transported him back to the shelter to sober up before any questioning. The raccoon recovered without injuries and was later released back into the wild with a hopeful reminder that breaking and entering isn’t the right approach.

This case highlights the unpredictable ways wildlife can interact with human spaces—and it offers a lighthearted, if cautionary, note about the consequences of tempting wild animals with alcohol and open-access stores.

What lessons do you think communities should take from incidents like this? Should policies or public guidance change to prevent wildlife from accessing alcohol or other regulated goods, and if so, how might that balance safety with compassion for animals?
