Suffolk's Autonomous Adventure: A Self-Driving Bus in the Spotlight
Suffolk is making waves with its innovative approach to transportation. The local council has been hard at work, collaborating with Smart City Consultancy to evaluate the technical, operational, and regulatory challenges of integrating autonomous shuttle services into a potential future mobility network across the county. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize how residents and visitors move within Suffolk.
The council is also partnering with Ohmio UK to conduct a £325,000 feasibility study, exploring the practical application of autonomous shuttle buses. And the star of the show is the ADASTRA prototype, a fully autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or driver's seat, designed in New Zealand.
ADASTRA can accommodate up to 14 passengers at speeds of up to 40 mph (64 km/h). However, during the trial, it's been operating at a more cautious pace, limited to eight seated passengers and a safety operator, traveling at up to 15 mph (24 km/h). This cautious approach ensures the safety and comfort of passengers and allows for a thorough evaluation of the technology.
The trial is a significant step forward in showcasing the potential of self-driving buses and their ability to transform urban and rural transportation. As Suffolk continues to lead the way in autonomous transportation, it invites residents and visitors alike to envision a future where travel is efficient, sustainable, and truly driverless.
