Total War: Medieval 3 - A Historical Revolution (2026)

Bold statement: Total War fans, brace for a historic reboot in medieval gaming—and yes, it’s bigger than a simple sequel. Creative Assembly has unveiled Total War: Medieval 3, signaling a return to the series’ deep historical roots while promising a “bold revolution” that could reshape how the franchise plays. The reveal came during Creative Assembly’s 25th-anniversary showcase, and while no release window was announced, the project is clearly in early pre-production, suggesting a longer development road ahead.

The studio describes the game as “the ultimate medieval strategy sandbox,” designed to let players shape realms, rewrite history, and immerse themselves in the Middle Ages like never before. The promise blends rigorous historical authenticity with unprecedented player agency, positioning Medieval 3 as more than a mere continuation—an actual rebirth of historical Total War.

Accompanying the announcement was a live-action teaser and a batch of concept art, giving a first glimpse at the ambitious project.

Alongside Medieval 3, Creative Assembly revealed Warcore, the new game engine described as the franchise’s “next evolution.” The company emphasizes that Warcore is the most advanced tech foundation in Total War’s history, equipping developers with tools to create more immersive, dynamic, and responsive gameplay.

Importantly, Warcore is designed to evolve over time, with ongoing updates expected to unlock new capabilities and keep the strategy genre at the cutting edge for years to come. A key consequence of Warcore is that future Total War titles could launch on PlayStation and Xbox for the first time, expanding the series’ platform reach.

The studio also teased another major announcement at The Game Awards on December 11—a new, “next major release” that Creative Assembly calls one of the franchise’s most ambitious projects and the start of an exciting new era.

This is all occurring as Sega-owned Creative Assembly juggles multiple projects, including continued updates to Total War: Warhammer 3 and a planned Alien: Isolation 2.
