In the wake of a winter storm that blanketed the region, a cul-de-sac situated on a hill connecting Rainwood Drive and Chapel Hill Road became particularly treacherous. Ice and snow accumulated on the roads, leaving some vehicles unable to ascend. Valerie Massan, a local resident, shared her observations with KOMU 8 News via email, noting, "The trash truck came down the hill and couldn’t get back up."
This incident didn’t just impact one truck; it was part of a broader issue affecting the city’s waste collection efforts. Columbia Utilities spokesperson Matt Nestor informed KOMU 8 that several areas had to be skipped the previous day due to unsafe driving conditions.
"There were some areas of town that were bypassed yesterday because the streets were still too covered for the trucks to get through," Nestor explained in his email. Fortunately, crews were dedicated to remedying the situation and working diligently to get back on track with their schedule.
After multiple attempts, the trash truck finally managed to conquer the icy slope on its seventh try. Even so, this incident highlighted a learning curve for the waste management teams. "Crews are still learning about how trucks handle in icy conditions," Nestor remarked. He added that last winter, they discovered that the side-loader trucks performed differently than the vehicles they had used in prior seasons.
