Unveiling the Knicks' Hilarious Recruitment Videos: From Kawhi to Kyrie (2026)

Pablo Torre has once again managed to unearth a rather embarrassing recruitment video from the New York Knicks featuring their attempts to attract superstar Kawhi Leonard.

In the wake of the Knicks finally securing a championship title for the first time in over half a century, it seems that Pablo Torre is dedicated to exposing moments that highlight the team's past follies. We find ourselves in a new and exciting chapter of Knicks basketball—one characterized by rising expectations for success. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that relying on quirky recruitment videos won’t entice major free agents to join the team. Last year, Torre showcased just how ineffective these gimmicks were when he revealed an old video from 2010 in which the Knicks sought to recruit LeBron James. Now, he has brought to light their recruitment efforts aimed at not just Kawhi Leonard, but also Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.

The spotlight of this episode of "Pablo Torre Finds Out" primarily focused on the video aimed at Leonard. This focus makes perfect sense, considering Torre's extensive coverage of Leonard and the fact that this particular video stands out as the most cringeworthy among the Knicks’ recruitment efforts.

The video resembles a comedic sketch reminiscent of Saturday Night Live, featuring a star-studded lineup including Jay Pharoah, Kenan Thompson, Michael Che, Ben Stiller, Tracy Morgan, Al Roker, and Jason Biggs. The premise begins with who seems to be Leonard watching his own recruitment video; however, it quickly becomes clear that it's actually Jay Pharoah portraying Leonard—a peculiar choice by the Knicks that raises eyebrows.

Leonard is known for his preference for privacy regarding his personal life, and even based on what little is known about him, it’s hard to imagine that this video would have captivated his interest or influenced his decision-making. Unsurprisingly, the video failed to sway Leonard into joining the Knicks; in fact, it didn’t even lead him to consider a meeting with them. Yet, the Knicks persisted, sending similar videos to both Irving and Durant in their pursuit.

In stark contrast to Leonard, Kyrie Irving tends to share more about his personality than most fans might wish to know. It appears that Irving is not someone easily impressed by flashy recruitment tactics or hype-filled videos. Still, that didn't deter the Knicks from making their pitch.

Irving’s recruitment video was sent to him on a Knicks-branded tube television, which is an interesting touch worth noting. Instead of a comedy skit, this video showcases legends from Rucker Park and even features a forward-looking segment set in 2027 that imagines Irving's impact on New York City. Among the various recruitment videos, this one may have been the least cringeworthy, although it still fell short of its intended goal.

Previously, Torre revealed that Durant’s recruitment strategy involved a song and music video created by the Wu-Tang Clan. Like their attempts with Leonard and Irving, the Knicks were ultimately unsuccessful in recruiting Durant, as both stars chose to sign with the Brooklyn Nets in 2019.

Fortunately, the era of the Knicks being seen as perennial underachievers seems to be behind us. Let’s hope that their reliance on quirky recruitment videos is a thing of the past as well. Instead of focusing on gimmicks, the Knicks should concentrate on showcasing their financial capabilities, presenting a talented roster, and highlighting the allure of living in New York City. Because if they don’t learn from past mistakes, Pablo Torre will undoubtedly uncover those recruitment videos and share them with the world, much to the embarrassment of the franchise.
