The Red Rocks' Season Opener: A Tale of Triumph and Missed Chances
The stage was set for an electrifying start to the season. In Salt Lake City, the highly-ranked Red Rocks gymnastics team took on two formidable Big Ten opponents, and the result was a thrilling showcase of talent and determination.
But here's the catch: while they emerged victorious, the team's performance wasn't without its flaws. With a score of 196.625, they comfortably beat Minnesota (195.475) and Iowa (194.825), but the gymnasts and their coach, Carly Dockendorf, knew they had more to give.
"It was a stepping stone," said senior Makenna Smith, acknowledging the team's highs and lows. "We can learn and grow from this." Dockendorf agreed, praising the team's efforts but recognizing the need for improvement, especially with a challenging quad meet against top-ranked opponents looming next weekend.
And this is where it gets intriguing. Despite the win, the Red Rocks encountered uncharacteristic errors, notably from sophomore leader Avery Neff, who usually thrives under pressure. Dockendorf attributed these mistakes to the excitement of the season debut, but also believes it will fuel Neff's motivation for the next meet.
"Avery is self-driven and will bounce back stronger," Dockendorf assured. "The experience will make her hungrier for success."
The night also marked a significant milestone for junior Ella Zirbes, who claimed the all-around crown in her first-ever all-around competition. Zirbes' performance, including a team-high score on the beam, was a testament to her hard work and dedication. Dockendorf expressed her pride in Zirbes' growth and her confidence in her abilities across all events.
"Ella has earned her place," Dockendorf said. "She's ready to shine in every aspect."
Freshmen Bailey Stroud and Abby Ryssman also made their mark, securing spots in the starting lineups. Dockendorf praised their efforts and confirmed that the lineups will remain largely unchanged, as each gymnast has proven their worth.
As the Red Rocks look ahead, the question remains: Can they rise to the occasion and showcase their full potential against tougher competition? Only time will tell, but the team is determined to learn from their debut and strive for perfection.
